How was your Turkey Day weekend? Eat too much? Get indigestion from watching the Cowboys stomp Tampa? What about Black Friday? Who has their Christmas shopping done? Did you see anyone die crashing into a big tv on sale at Wal-Mart? For me Thanksgiving weekend went smoothly. I went to my aunt and uncle's home near Green Bay last Thursday. We ate plenty of turkey, drank a little wine, and took an entire pumpkin pie home--that lasted only one day. After pouring through the ads I didn't find anything to get me out on Black Friday. Instead, I slept late and watched whatever college sporting event was on tv. Saturday was off to my aunt and uncle who live near New London for another turkey meal. The highlights there were meeting my cousin's girlfriend and tossing beanbags outside because the weather was so nice. Sunday was football even though the Packers weren't playing. The Patriots beating the Bears made up for my bad fantasy football showings. My Thanksgiving weekend turned out well. I kicked back with the family and ended up not eating too much.

I see the Patriots as a well managed team that attempts to use its versatility as its core competence. As I have written before, the Patriots seek to take away the opposition's first choice option. The fundamental gamble here is that the Patriots are betting that their second, third or fourth preferred style of play is vastly superior to whatever the opponent's second preferred style of play. This was seen most notably in the 2002 Super Bowl against the Rams where the Patriots were able to disrupt Marshall Faulk for the entire game, and thus putting the offense solely on Kurt Warner's shoulders. The Greatest Show on Turf managed 17 points. This year, I think that the Patriots are significantly deeper and more versatile on offense. With the return of Ben Watson, I will be shocked if the Patriots do not line up with two tight ends for at least forty percent of their first downs. Richardy Seymour and Vince Wilfork each demand two blockers on running plays, and Ty Warren will dominate against most right tackles when he is one on one. Oakland will be forced to keep their running backs or tight ends in to help block more often than they would prefer. The strength of the defensive line is the strength of the unit as a whole. If the three linemen and the typical pass rushing linebacker can force Oakland to keep seven blockers in, the task for the secondary just got a whole lot easier. I am not sure who the starting cornerbacks will be tonight, as the Patriots currently have four corners who have started for Super Bowl winners on the roster. I would imagine that the Patriots will attempt to play some aggressive man with zone support against Randy Moss and keep Chad Scott in as the physical bump and run corner for at least third down plays. I also anticipate the Patriots keeping Eugene Wilson in deep centerfield for most of the game, as I think that the Patriots would be willing to see Moss have a T-O type game if they can shut down everyone else on the field. They just need to avoid the multiple big plays that are Moss's bread and butter, even if that means giving up more 10-15 yard gains. I am not sure what the Patriot linebackers will be doing this year. The outside linebackers are experienced, fast, smart and solid. Roosevelt Colvin should finally be completely healed from his hip injury suffered two years ago while Willie McGuinest just gets craftier and better as his health is still with him. I doubt that Willie McGuinest will be healthy for the entire season, but Tully Banta Cain, in limited playing time, has shown some significant pass rush ability over the past year. Mike Vrabel is just a playmaker who is never out of position. The loss of the top three playing time inside linebackers from last year is a large loss which creates a significant question mark. I am glad that Vrabel is shifting to the inside, as he is smart, and it will keep the Pats' three best linebackers on the field more often. The question mark is who plays next to him --- Monty Biesel or Chad Brown. I think this will be a platoon position with Brown in on run downs and Biesel in on pass downs. I have a difficult time seeing how the Raider's defense can keep the Patriots from scoring, and so far, the Patriots have taken down better quarterbacks who play vertical passing games with comparative ease (Hi there Kurt, hi there Peyton.) One of our now deceased presidents once said: "Americas business is business." Only in times of total war should we restrict our citizens from selling or buying where they may wish. Ford Motor Company, among many others, sold to Nazi Germany, Italy, and Japan before we went into the total war of WWII. They now sell cars in Iran and in other terrorist nations. Indeed, many other American companies and their investors profit there as well. Legionnaires, we are not in total war. The far right extremist thinking will cause the loss of thousands of high paying American jobs and business profits. Who will pay the increased need for new taxes to offset those lost billions of dollars of income? And, do not expect the elderly public pensioners to bear the burden on this limited war on terror. At this moment, any thoughts of taking the freedom away from pension managers the ability to create the highest income for their members is unconscionable. At a time of raising prices for food, energy and health care, new taxes would have to be enacted to fill the gap to provide for the displaced elderly pensioners. Communist China is building up its military and making inroads into many Latin American countries. Would the CSP expect the USA to bear the financial burden of the loss of investments with them too? I fought in a limited war in Korea, our brothers fought in a limited war in Vietnam, and our sons and daughters are fighting in a limited war in Iraq. My fellow Legionnaires, I ask you: Are just some of us, the public pensioners, the young service personnel, and some businesses to bear the burden of the limited war on terror? Or, are we all to equally share the burden? And, is it worth the risk of total war? Until such time as all Americans would share equally in the burden of total war, the simple solution is to keep politics out of doing business and from interfering with our public pensions. McGreevey wrote that Dina Matos McGreevey "knew of my sexual orientation before our marriage[;] she chose to either ignore it or block it out of her mind, even when questioned by her friends." The former governor does not detail how she knew he was gay but objects to his wife's contention in recent court papers that he is bisexual.
