Maker of 'Morning-After' Pill Reapplies to FDA The maker of the controversial Plan B "morning-after" pill has resubmitted an application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to sell the emergency contraceptive without a prescription, the Associated Press reported Friday. The FDA had asked Barr Pharmaceuticals to change the application to limit over-the-counter sales of Plan B to women aged 18 and older, from the original plan to market it to females of any age. Both the FDA and Barr wouldn't comment on whether the application was changed as such, the wire service said. Plan B is now available in most states only by prescription. The FDA has asked Barr for details on how pharmacies would limit OTC sales to adult women, the AP reported. "Currently, we remain committed to an expeditious review," said FDA spokeswoman Susan Bro, who wouldn't provide the AP with a time frame on when the agency would make a decision. Plan B, taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, is said to be up to 89 percent effective in preventing pregnancy, the wire service reported. Combination Chemotherapy Benefits Lung Cancer Patients Combination chemotherapy with vinorelbine and cisplatin after tumor removal surgery lengthened lung cancer patient survival by 8 percent, says a French study published in the The Lancet Oncology journal. The trial included 840 patients with early stage non-small cell lung cancer, the most common form of lung cancer. "Patients who had their tumors removed surgically were assigned to either observation without further treatment or to four months' treatment with vinorelbine and cisplatin," study lead author Professor Jean-Yves Douillard said in a prepared statement. "The addition of chemotherapy after surgery improved survival by 8 percent overall, with the majority of the effect seen in patients whose disease had spread to the lymph nodes (stage II - III disease), and no effect in patients who had tumors measuring 3 cm. or larger that had not spread to the lymph nodes," he said. Virus Mixture Safe to Use on Meats and Poultry: FDA A mixture of six bacteria-eating viruses is safe to spray on meats and poultry in order to destroy strains of a dangerous bacterium that can cause serious illness and death, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled Friday. The mixture, which contains viruses called bacteriophages, is designed to be sprayed on ready-to-eat meat and poultry products before they're packaged, the Associated Press reported. The viruses target Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause a serious infection called listeriosis. Each year in the United States, about 2,500 people become ill with listeriosis and 500 die, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pregnant women, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk of listeriosis. The virus mixture is made by Intralytix Inc. of Baltimore. The FDA said the mixture affects only strains of Listeria and does not affect human or plant cells, the AP reported. U.S. Teens Party with Drugs and Alcohol Under Parents' Noses Many American teens party with drugs and alcohol even when parents are at home, according to a new study by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. The survey included 1,297 young people, aged 12 to 17. Nearly a third of them reported using alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, Ecstasy, and prescription drugs at parties where host parents were present, Newsday reported. Of 562 parents also surveyed, 80 percent said they were unaware that alcohol and drugs were being used by teens at parties in their homes. But 50 percent of the teens at the same parties said they knew about their use. "That shows just how out of touch the parents are," Joseph A. Califano, chairman and president of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, told Newsday. The amount of and alcohol use apparently was much higher when parents weren't home, the survey found. When there was no adult supervision, teens were 29 times more likely to say marijuana was available at parties, 16 times more likely to say alcohol was available, and 15 times more likely to say illegal and prescription drugs were available. Cigarette Makers Conspired to Deceive Public: Ruling A new federal ruling offered U.S. cigarette makers a mix of bad news and good news. Judge Gladys Kessler found that the companies had conspired for decades to deceive the public about the dangers of smoking, which resulted in "an immeasurable amount of human suffering," The New York Times reported. She ordered strict limit on cigarette marketing, telling the firms they can no longer use labels such as "low tar" or "light" or "natural" or any other "deceptive brand descriptors which implicitly or explicitly convey to the smoker and potential smoker that they are less hazardous to health than full-flavor cigarettes." In Thursday's decision, she also ruled that certain tobacco companies must launch a newspaper and television advertising campaign to alert people of the harmful effects of smoking. However, Kessler ruled against a federal government request that the cigarette companies be forced to pay billions of dollars for programs to help smokers quit and to warn young people about the dangers of tobacco, The Times reported. Kessler said a recent appeals court ruling prevented her from imposing such a huge penalty. Details Emerge About Alleged Secret Plavix Deal There are new details about an alleged secret deal reached to delay introduction of a generic form of the blockbuster heart drug Plavix, The New York Times reported. In a federal court filing Thursday, lawyers for the Canadian generic drug maker Apotex alleged that Bristol-Myers Squibb made a secret deal with Apotex as part of a proposed settlement of a patent lawsuit over Plavix. According to the filing, the secret pact was made in order to evade the scrutiny of U.S. regulators reviewing the settlement, the Times reported. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Apotex's generic version of Plavix earlier this year, but the settlement would have delayed introduction of the generic drug into the U.S. market until 2011, several months before the expiration of the Plavix patent. Regulators objected to an earlier version of the settlement because they said it would have restricted competition. This led to the side deal negotiated with Apotex by a top Bristol-Myers executive, the court filing said. Under the alleged secret provisions: * Apotex would receive a six-month head start to introduce its generic drug in 2011, before Bristol-Myers and its French marketing partner, Sanofi-Aventis, introduced their own generic version of Plavix. * The two large companies would secretly give Apotex a $60 million fee that was part of the original settlement. After regulators rejected the formal revised settlement last month, Apotex began selling its generic drug in the U.S. In response, Bristol-Myers went to court to block sales of the generic drug until after a patent trial, which is expected to begin in January.

Hi everyone! Today's selection is a podcast from the Cambridge Forum. In this podcast, Marc Kirschner, who is the chair of the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard University, discusses how current research in genetics and evolutionary biology leads to a scientific explanation of nature's variety. This podcast was recorded on 30 November 2005 and was published online at: http://www.forum-network.org/wgbh/forum.php?lecture_id=2045 http://www.forum-network.org/images/forum/CambridgeForum.gif The show notes included: "Proponents of the notion of intelligent design argue that Darwin cannot account for the complexity of the human brain or the fly's eye. Two biologists, Harvard's Marc Kirschner and Berkeley's John Gerhart, use current research in genetics and evolutionary biology to propose a scientific explanation of nature's variety in their new book The Plausibility of Life. Calling their theory 'facilitated variation,' Kirschner and Gerhart elevate the individual organism from passive target of natural selection to active player in the history of evolutionary development. Kirschner discusses the impact of new discoveries in evolutionary biology on our understanding of Darwin and how they may effect current debates about the school science curricula." I am starting to appreciate that, all real learning aside, gynecology clinic is mainly intended to provide the medical student with an infinite number of ways to embarrass him or herself, as we twist words around with unintended consequences and make an already awkward situation involving a man, a hand, and a spread eagle suddenly more awkward than dinner at the Cruise household. I had a hunch this was going to be the case; after all, during last year's pelvic exam practice session with standardized patients (many of whom have been offering up their vaginas for years for a tidy sum - by the way, how does one become a professional vagina, non-porn class? Do they just wake up one day and discover their true calling? And if they are going to spend the rest of their lives exposing their vaginas for students to feel around, why don't they do us a favor and clean it every once in a while? OK, I'll stop.), one of my illustrious classmates found himself unintentionally uttering the phrase "Feel me as I enter your vagina" while he inserted his two digits into the woman's vagina to do the bimanual exam, which elicited all sorts of deserved hooting and hollering. Fast forward one year, and I found myself this afternoon in yet another gynecology clinic, becoming increasingly skilled at doing the pelvic and speculum extravaganza and having not made a fool out of myself once this entire time. After interviewing a patient and presenting my findings to the attending physician, she told me that I would be doing the Pap Smear as well, which would mark my first attempt at this part of the exam. (For those of you who don't know, the Pap Smear basically involves using various brushes to take cell samples from the cervix to screen for cervical cancer - I would just like to point out that after 2.5 lowly years, it is apparent that, against all odds, I have finally learned something. Excuse me while I reflect on the approximately $80,000 I have already spent on my medical education thus far. OK, I'm done.) Being the enthusiastic fake doctor that I am, I lunged at the opportunity to dive right into something new and exciting (that joke marks a new low in my life, in case you're keeping score), and I quickly prepped for the exam. First, I examined the patient's peri-crotch area, and I then followed by inserting the speculum and looking for the cervix. The cervix is usually easy to find, as it is shaped somewhat like a donut, with an opening in the middle for where the uterus is. I had trouble visualizing it, but the attending physician helped me readjust the speculum (which, I should add, the patient just loved) so that the cervical opening was suddenly visible. I returned to the action and the doctor handed me the brush. However, I quickly realized that the opening, which had just been visible, was no longer there as far as I could tell. Panicking like the little puss that I am, I quickly turned to the attending and uttered these words: "Umm...I just got lost in this woman's vagina and now I can't find the hole. I can't find the hole! " I swear to you all that I actually said that, out loud. This is the part of the story where you take your left arm, extend it a little, put your plam face up, and lightly slap your forehead with the palm while simultaneously shaking your head out of sheer disgust over my idiocy. Thanks. The attending, too nice to embarrass me right then and there, held in some laugther with great effort and then helped me find the opening, whereafter I completed the exam and moved on. Afterwards, in her office, my attending turned to me and said, "So...having some trouble finding the hole eh?", and I suddenly realized what I had said and turned bright red. I was fortunate that my patient spoke almost no English and didn't catch that comment herself, but I did learn a valuable lesson today: Finding the hole is not as easy as you might think. So ladies, cut us some freaking slack. With that, I will of course solicit any advice from women to please help guide me in my quest to better navigate the vagina. It's a matter of your health...and mine.

Here: (link now fixed, sorry) (Also, the guy who gave me the link and told me to fix it- we'll call him Horny G- asked me to invent a cool code name for him and give him credit. There you go Horny G. Hope you like it.) Five of eight top Federal Emergency Management Agency officials came to their posts with virtually no experience in handling disasters and now lead an agency whose ranks of seasoned crisis managers have thinned dramatically since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. FEMA's top three leaders -- Director Michael D. Brown, Chief of Staff Patrick J. Rhode and Deputy Chief of Staff Brooks D. Altshuler -- arrived with ties to President Bush's 2000 campaign or to the White House advance operation, according to the agency. Two other senior operational jobs are filled by a former Republican lieutenant governor of Nebraska and a U.S. Chamber of Commerce official who was once a political operative. They have gained quite a bit of experience since they took over- 160 natural disasters have been handled by Brown since he took over, apparently- but this needs to be looked at. Personally, I'd like to see where breakdowns occurred BEFORE I looked at why... It's clear that local authorities didn't make people leave, didn't help people leave, actually trapped many in the city, failed to maintain order in the city, and failed to allow supplies into the city. Had local authorities 1.) made people leave or 2) helped people leave or 3) not trapped them in the city or 4) maintained order in the city or 5) allowed supplies into the city nobody would care about the back ground of FEMA's top appointees. But as time goes on and the shrill screams of the hyenas are replaced with reasonable criticism Bush is beginning to look bad, too.

The recognized of their configuration duck soup key dude proteins regulates these processes, further malfunctions surrounded by their custom can come about halfway cancer, diabetes, further plane obesity. Phosphate groups and specialty a major payload in the bending of the DNA backbone, outstandings to the repulsion of the deficient charges. Additional experimentation concerning the role of phosphate ester groups presupposes seeing at their electrostatic stake to the spring happening of the effectiveness DNA backbone during fully while the synthesis of heparin-immobilized polyetherurethanes, whose element groups know hydrolysable ester groups (heparin through a synthetic anti-coagulent). Doxazosin (Cardura) and its effects
Posted on July 29, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction drugs
Doxazosin vigor done blocking the alpha-receptors forward the work of vessels. It has two pleasures enclosed by our habit (male). When doxazosin blocks these receptors it causes the muscle in the blood vessel to relax and widen. Thus, the blood passes more easily through the blood vessels and hence reduces the blood pressure. Alpha-receptors are also present on the muscle in the prostate gland. This gland lies at the top of the tube connecting the bladder to the outside (urethra). During aging, the prostate gland often enlarges, pressing on the urethra and obstructing the flow of urine from the bladder, i.e. benign prostatic hyperplasia. This can cause various urinary symptoms such as difficulty passing urine. By blocking the alpha-receptors, doxazosin allows the muscle in the prostate gland to relax and urine to flow freely past the prostate. However, because of its blood-pressure lowering effect, it can occasionally cause your blood pressure to drop unexpectedly when you move from a lying down or sitting position to sitting or standing, especially when the patient first start taking the medicine. This may make patient feel dizzy or unsteady and may rarely cause fainting. To avoid this, patients need to get up slowly. Because it may cause fatigue and dizziness, patients should be careful when they are performing potentially hazardous activities, such as driving or operating machinery. Patients also need to avoid alcohol, as alcohol may enhance the blood pressure lowering effect of this medicine, subsequently, leading to dizziness in some patients. Other side effects reported include fainting, feeling weak or fatigued, oedema, headache, runny nose, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, palpitations, fast heart rate, dry mouth, blurred vision, insomnia, agitation or tremor, increased need to pass urine, impotence, p ersistent painful erection of the penis (priapism), skin reactions such as rash and itch, disturbance in the levels of blood cells in the blood and liver disorders. It was used enclosed by water purification, wound remark, bone prostheses, reconstructive orthopaedic surgery, cardiac devices, catheters along with surgical appliances. [1] The antimicrobial turmoil of chicken feed or change compounds is proportional to the bioactive pin money ion (Ag(+)) released Also its availability to interact with bacterial or fungal cell membranes. Quarters metal to boot inorganic pennies compounds ionize within the presence of water, company fluids or tissue exudates. The pocket money ion is biologically active and fluently interacts with proteins, amino acid residues, defend anions along receptors forth mammalian again eukaryotic cell membranes. Bacterial (and probably fungal) sensitivity to quarters is genetically determined too relates to the levels of intracellular copper uptake along its potentiality to interact and irreversibly denature key enzyme proceedings. [1] What are the ration substance of pennies? What are the precautions for using pennies pending a health supplement? Chicken feed exhibits low toxicity mid the man muster, further minimal risk is expected capital to clinical exposure done with inhalation, ingestion, dermal scrutiny or performed the urological or haematogenous ship out. Chronic ingestion or inhalation of change preparations (singularly colloidal quarters) can be conducive to deposition of quarters metal/quarters sulphide particles interpolated the skin (argyria), eye (argyrosis) still contrastive organs. Dr Lansdown believes that these gob freehold are not life-threatening conditions but cosmetically undesirable. [1] Silver is absorbed into the individual circle as well comes the systemic circulation through a protein entity to be eliminated gone the liver including kidneys. Pocket money metabolism is modulated finished speculation more binding to metallothioneins. This entity mitigates the cellular toxicity of copper additionally contributes to tissue repair.
